What a fighter

A friend lost a brother,
have i not lost a brother?
a friend mourns,
do i not also mourn?
do these tears not find us both?
are we not to share this loss?
give me the sackcloth,
take the blouse,
give me the wrapper
and the scarf to him
he who cares to share,
to make the grieve lighter,

but it wasn't light for him
the one death did not allow,
the one who was always in gloves,
the one that slept in the ring,
the one who had no room for shadow boxing
the anemia battle was his training session
the main bout was always on,
like a kindled fire,
always burning bright and hot,
never running short of fuel
the wood was in excess,
it supply was the thick mangroove forest,
but for him?

but for himself,
where was the source?
where was the strenght?
was there strenght?
frail and weak,
tender like the little plant leaf,
strenght was from his weakness,
his strenght was from God,
the lions of the dreaded anemia could not roar,
He was who he was
His name was Daniel,
from the nobel family of Odusanya.
He stood for life,
he fought for life,
he was strong,
even him can bear alone all this that we share,
his pain wasnt an issue but yours,
he was a fighter, for he was DANIEL
the great Daniel.

All may have seem to have been lost,
but not for us,
not for daniel,
the one the Lion did not subdue,
for the fight is for another day
u can take the gloves, not the hand that wore them,
you can take the breath but the spirit is forever alive
with the pains that you gave,
with all that you did,
you couldn't erase his smile, he was one amongst a few
he stood aloof, like a shining amour.
he may be gone, but not in our minds
not from our memories,how can?
that hospital bed will never forget,
as the clock ticked to a stop,
it was 10:30am,
it was the 15th day of july,
it was the 22nd year of the bout,
He stood and fought against the hydra-head monster,
Named SICKLE CELL ANEMIA.
Adieu DANIEL ODUSANYA,
i never met you
but i met your being,
through those you affected and infected,
that battles can be lost but not the fight.
Adieu Daniel, rest in the bossom of thy maker

ORANGE SUN

what are you thinking of today?
are you thinking of your tiring job,
your finance, spouse, needs, the list is endless
like it was the day after..
Today, am thinking not about today,
but about a day that was like today,
a day that started like today
am thinking about that black Sunday
when the orange evening sun,
hovered over the water
as the fishes jumping and gliding to have a feel of warmth,
the children, playing hide and seek,
the women, preparing dinner
the men, sitting and wondering which way the day after would point
then, the sun turned blood
and rained over the water
the canal became a womb
it took men, women and their offspring
it took all, joy and hope was gone
that same canal...
the explosions did not kill,
the noise did nothing,
the inferno was great, but it burnt no one
that same serene canal,
that was like it wasn't
claimed yet all..
It took humans and left corpses
I watched a bereaved man, losing it for the loss of his only child,
sights and sounds of the black Sunday?
no, sights and sorrow of the black Sunday
sorrow was in the land
yet, it was a Sunday
On the next day,
the Moon-day, the Monday
the day after the "SUN-day"
life began on a new note,
it went on, leaving some people behind
leaving the hearts of some,
lost in that canal
burring the hopes of some at the bank,
life did move on
like it will always do,
it moved too fast for some,
breaking the hands of the clock
leaving them without dawn and dusk...
I think about that day,
i still hear the sounds,
the shattering glasses,
the piercing screams,
the howling and growling
the sorrow, the pains, the grief
i cant say it all
January 27th, 2001 says it all
